SASC is... well, Special!
By April Helena (fka "April Peebles")

I grew up in the Midwest going to antique fairs with my mom and have always loved old things.  I get such a thrill being able to learn about and order important pieces of history as part of my position liaising with Special & Area Studies Collections Department, or SASC.  Just this month, Iā€™ve seen a collection of twenty-two contracts for indentured Chinese laborers in Cuba in the 1860s and 1870s, some fascinating photos of Fidel Castro attending a birthday celebration, some beautifully illustrated vintage travel pamphlets, a 1920s manual of artificial limbs, and a really unique manuscript attempting to chronologically document world history from 4000BCE to 1764!  So many lovely details ā€“ little hinges, and beautiful swirled handwriting, faded gold titles and bookplates as fascinating as the content inside. Not many other areas will have something delivered in a custom made box, or use a vendor whose slogan is ā€œBooks Bought & Occasionally Sold.ā€

The curators are also so cool and passionate about their work.  I appreciate how welcoming they have all been, some even giving me personal tours of the collections!

It is clear that SASC is doing important work promoting, preserving, and growing our collections to "advance knowledge for the future" and support the academic mission of the University of Florida and I am proud to be a part of that.

E-Resources Unit Resource Highlights
A special thank you to Devon Hickey and the rest of the e-resources unit

Weā€™re pleased to announce three newly-accessible e-resources: History Vault: Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Law and Order in 19th Century America 1636-1880; Nursing and Mental Health in Video; and Krasnyi Arkhiv.  The links below will work, but you can also access these e-resources in Primo and via the A-Z database list.

Itā€™s exciting to gain access to such rich, primary source collections and archives!

History Vault: Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Law and Order in the 19th Century America, 1636-1880

This module documents the international and domestic traffic in slaves in Britainā€™s New World colonies and the United States, providing important primary source material on the business aspect of the slave trade. In addition to records on the slave trade, this module also includes letters received by the Attorney General on law and order in 19th century America. These letters cover the slave trade, general slavery matters including runaway slaves and rights of slaves, and other legal issues.

Nursing and Mental Health in Video: A Symptom Media Collection

Features over 240 videos of the most common mental health disorders nurses may encounter ā€“ whether in a primary care setting, emergency room, medical, psychiatric, or other. These essential visual examples will prepare nurses to better assess, diagnose, and manage mental health issues in patients. Faculty can easily integrate these 2-22-minute-long videos within lectures, discussion groups, tests, and distance learning programs. Nursing and Mental Health in Video supports the existing curriculum at all levels ā€“ undergraduate, graduate, and professional.

Krasnyi Arkhiv

This journal was published in Moscow from 1922 till June 1941. The proclaimed goal of this journal was to reveal the secrets of diplomatic documents hidden in the archives of Tsarist Russia and to regularly publish important archival papers ā€œfor the education of the proletariatā€. The complete set of Krasnyi Arkhiv contains more than 900 unique archival documents on the history of Russia in the 19th and 20th centuries, development of the Bolshevik movement and the Russian communist party, Russian civil war, Russiaā€™s foreign policy, the history of Russian endeavors in Siberia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan.
