ELUNA 2024
By Jason Heckathorn

Last month, I had the privilege of attending ELUNA 2024 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. ELUNA is the international user community for Ex Libris customers in the Americas. This annual gathering brings together leading experts and professionals in the field of acquisitions, collections, metadata, and systems to share research, best practices, and insights.

Throughout the three-day event, I attended various sessions covering topics such as practical applications, strategies, content, discovery, migration/implementation, AI/emerging technologies and standards, analytics, and DEIA. One of my highlights was the panel discussion I participated in on Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA) in Rialto, which featured panelists from Clarivate, Florida State University and California State University Channel Islands. This led to being invited for a focus group where I was able to candidly share opinions on the implementation of EBA in Rialto, challenges in its management, and theoretical developments in Alma and elsewhere.

Though I was the only one attending from the University of Florida, I was able to connect with many FLVC colleagues as well as those attending from other Florida institutions. Minnesota had much to offer culturally - I thoroughly enjoyed the Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody exhibit at the Walker Art Center (and the adjoining Minneapolis Sculpture Garden). I also had the good fortune to be in town for multiple playoffs runs from the NBAā€™s Minnesota Timberwolves and PWHL Minnesota (eventually won the finals!).

Overall, ELUNA was an enriching experience that broadened my knowledge, sparked new ideas, and reinforced the importance of continuous learning and professional development.

weloveforms

There's a bit of a running joke around here that Acquisitions loves forms.  But it's true, a good form can make everything better, reduce mistakes, and help with data and organization.

We have internal forms we use for things like making streaming videos accessible on Primo, and external forms selectors and curators can use for purchases.

Forms can be found here (many are password protected; if you believe you should have access and don't know the password, please reach out to Acquisitions!)

Here are some of them:
  • Firm Order Request Form ā€“ For purchase requests requiring special handling, not listed as ā€œIn stockā€ in Rialto Market, or need patron email notifications.
  • SASC Approval Stream Firm Order Request Form ā€“ This form is used by Special & Areas Studies Collections selectors to initiate an approval stream for an endowment purchase.
  • Departmental Approval Stream Firm Order Request Form ā€“ This form is used by Departmental Libraries selectors to initiate an approval stream for an endowment purchase.
  • Print Serials
    • New Continuation Order Request Form
    • Continuation Cancellation Request Form
  • Gift Forms ā€“ library staff can use these forms to acknowledge the receipt of gifts and internal processing.

The lives of those who survive, including sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed. Across the country, Tina Cannon is convinced her missing friend was targeted by the man papers refer to as the All-American Sex Killerā€”and that heā€™s struck again. Determined to find justice, the two join forces as their search for answers leads to a final, shocking confrontation.

April Hines kindly shared some feedback on our new NewsBank Florida newspaper archives:ļ»æ

"...even though we've only had the new NewsBank titles for a few weeks - I've already used one - the Daytona Beach News Journal - to help a reporter find articles related to a federal prosecution he is researching that happened in the early 90's. He couldn't find much because open web access for that paper doesn't go back that far, and newspapers.com doesn't have that title. So UF Libraries to the rescue. šŸ™‚"

Thank you, April, for this great feedback, we love to hear it!

abc
African Books Collective

African Books Collective (ABC) is an African-owned mission-based distribution outlet for books published independently in Africa. The publishers from across the continent who are part of the collective have over its 30 year history contributed some 3000 titles, which continue to be available in print. Over 2000 of these are available digitally on this platform and new titles will be added regularly.

The publishers include: scholarly and literary presses; childrenā€™s book publishers; research institutes; university presses; commercial presses ā€“ large and small; NGOs; writer, academic, and activist organizations or collectives.

Dan Reboussin, our African Studies Collections curator, and Acquisitions worked together with ABC to be able to offer e-books from independent African publishers to our users and readers.
